Sophie Eats Popcorn

I love this portrait of Sophie relaxing indoors after we had spent the day in the sun.  We were in a villa somewhere in the heart of Italy.  This series captures the raw beauty of human emotion and behaviour.

Image Clothing

‘In the fashion photo a number of garments are present, even if we see only one in the shot itself. The first item of clothing is a photographed reality; its substances are forms, lines, surfaces, colors, light, its relationship is spatial, and there is a discernible plastic structure. Secondly, there is a written reality that exists in the caption; its substance is words, its relationship is, if not logical, at least syntactical, and there is a verbal structure. The actual garment, that is, the one that is worn by the model in the shot, in turn forms a third structure that transmits information to the first two realities, but cannot be represented fully by either: the verbal reality does not describe it adequately because language cannot function as a tracing of reality as such, and, in any case a description in lengthy detail would take up too much space within the image. The photographic reality, on the other hand, does not describe the actual garment either because of the heightened artificiality of the image and the nature of the camera. The structural link between the garment in the caption and the photographed one often seems to be absent.’ Ulrich Lehmann, 2002:15
